Peristaltic pumps belong to the family of positive displacement pumps and can be divided into two different variants. In addition to the version with rollers, there is also a version with shoes. The medium to be conveyed is forced through the hose using external mechanical deformation with both types. The housing of the pump head supports the hose, and the rollers or shoes clamp it. Advantages and disadvantages of the peristaltic pump with shoes

Although peristaltic pumps with shoes have some disadvantages, they are the most widespread on the market. They are particularly suitable for applications that require high pressures. This is made possible, among other things, by the large contact surface between shoe and hose. It allows you to pump media with a pressure of up to 15 bar without any problems. In addition, this type of hose pump is particularly suitable for applications in continuous operation. However, the immense pressure area also has a disadvantage that should not be ignored. Since this creates enormous friction between the shoe and the hose, the power consumption of peristaltic pumps with shoes is significantly higher than that of pumps with rollers. On the one hand, this is due to the considerably higher starting torque and, on the other hand, to the greater friction during pumping. To counteract this problem and increase the hose's service life, large quantities of lubricant are necessary. Another disadvantage of this design is the limitations in terms of frequency and speed. This means that you are extremely limited in the maximum possible flow rate. In addition, strong pulsations occur when pumping with shoes. This means that connected pipelines and systems are easily damaged. 

Peristaltic pump with classic rollers - advantages and disadvantages

The peristaltic pump with classic rollers, on the other hand, is much less widespread, even though it has some advantages compared to the variant with sliding shoes. The design with rollers means that there is almost no friction between the hose and the rollers. As a result, it offers you an extremely low starting torque, which at the same time also noticeably reduces the power requirement. Thanks to the minimized friction, hardly any lubricant is needed. Another advantage is the high-frequency range. This allows you to manage enormously large flow rates. In addition, the pump's hose with rollers is much easier to change, which saves you time when changing the hose. But the classic rollers also have disadvantages. While the friction between the hose and the rollers is minimized, the pressure area is also reduced to a minimum. This leads to massive problems, especially in applications that require high pressure. For this reason, hose pumps with classic rollers are only suitable for simple applications.
