Sustainability at NETZSCH: Pioneering Steps Towards a Greener Future

NETZSCH Pumps & Systems is consistently committed to sustainability: With its ambitious goals and innovative measures, the global specialist in handling complex media is driving the reduction of emissions and offering its customers innovative and environmentally friendly solutions.

But it is more than just the Pumps & Systems business unit pursuing ambitious sustainability goals. The entire NETZSCH Group is committed to reducing direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 3.5 percent annually and achieving climate-neutral operations worldwide by 2045.

NETZSCH: Green beyond the corporate colours

The claim “Proven Excellence” promises outstanding performance in all areas, including sustainability. Environmental protection and sustainability have always played a crucial role at NETZSCH. Since 2019, we have been dealing with this topic even more intensively. Back in 2015, we introduced an environmental management system by DIN EN ISO 14001. For us, social responsibility goes well beyond simple compliance with regulations. “Sustainability is not just a buzzword for us, but a strategic approach that runs through all areas of our company. Our goal is to be a role model – for our industry, customers and employees”, says Johann Vetter, Director of Integrated Quality Management System and Sustainability. Data from the 13 production and nine assembly plants for Scope 1 and 2 have been systematically recorded for two years. This involves checking whether the defined targets have been achieved for each plant and, if not, what measures must be taken to comply with them. With the help of action plans coordinated with the respective plant management, CO2 consumption in Scopes 1 and 2 is sustainably reduced.

Comprehensive steps: From green electricity to CO2 calculations

Since 2022, in Germany, NETZSCH has only purchased green electricity and, where it makes sense, installed photovoltaic systems on the roofs of office and production buildings. Existing buildings are extensively renovated or rebuilt to the appropriate level (KFW 45). The NETZSCH Campus in Waldkraiburg serves as a role model here. In 2023 alone, CO2 emissions were reduced by a remarkable 2,257.19 tonnes, although total sales increased by around 7.5 percent. Since records began about climate neutrality, CO2 emissions have even been reduced by over 50 percent. During the same period, sales grew by 35 percent. To further reduce the PCF (Product Carbon Footprint), a partnership-based relationship is maintained with suppliers. Suppliers should have an evaluation on a CSR platform (CSR = Corporate Sustainability Reporting) and document their own PCF calculations.

Like many other midsize companies, reducing Scope 3 emissions is a bigger hurdle for NETZSCH than reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Scope 3 is divided into 15 categories, of which twelve apply to NETZSCH. In addition to the measures for suppliers already mentioned and the gold certificate awarded to the sustainable procurement organisation by the Bundesverband Materialwirtschaft, Einkauf und Logistik e.V. (BME), NETZSCH has carried out an ABC analysis, a business analysis method for the purchased parts mentioned in Scope 3 under Category 1. For example, we are working with suppliers to replace components with more energy-efficient materials. Plastic 3D printing can provide valuable services in this context, as the energy requirement is significantly lower than casting.

NETZSCH is your sustainable partner for pumping solutions

“Our goal is to produce long-lasting capital goods and to support their sustainable use by supplying spare parts and providing excellent service”, emphasises Vetter. Thanks to ongoing innovations and a role model in climate protection, NETZSCH shows how sustainable development and economic success can go hand in hand. For example, the products are sustainable throughout, thanks to their ease of repair and the worldwide availability of spare parts. When a pump has reached the end of its service life, all materials can be recycled, which, due to the high iron content of the products, is almost 100 percent. In addition, highly efficient IP5 motors are offered, and customers can already reduce the PCF of the pump by 66 percent by selecting series stators made of different materials.

NETZSCH advocates compliance with the 1.5-degree target and offers sustainable solutions that create competitive advantages. As a global specialist in handling complex media, we stand for responsibility, innovation, and a clear commitment to climate neutrality.
