Quenching 

Quenching is the continuous or intermittent introduction of a suitable clean fluid, compatible with the material being conveyed, on the atmosphere side of the main shaft seal

This process is used to keep out air or moisture, prevent or remove deposits, lubricate auxiliary seals, prevent sparking, dilute escaping leakage, heat or cool.
