Piston Pump

A reciprocating piston pump, also known as a reciprocating displacement pump or piston pump, is a positive displacement pump for pumping liquids. Its displacer, the piston, performs a reciprocating motion, which amounts to a straight-line (translatory) motion.

A reciprocating pump consists of a piston moving in a cylinder, combined with an inlet and an outlet, each of which a valve shuts off. During the first step, suction, the piston moves to the right. The inlet valve opens, and the pumped medium flows into the cylinder. In the second working step, during the delivery movement, the inlet valve closes while the piston moves back. At the same time, the exhaust valve opens, and the pumped medium is expelled.
