Innovative Corrosive Fluid Transfer in the Environmental and Energy Sectors
The efficient management of corrosive liquid waste, such as leachate, within the environmental and energy sectors demands pumping technologies capable of withstanding extreme technical challenges. These challenges range from high suction lifts to highly destructive fluid characteristics. In a strategic project managed by NETZSCH Singapore, the implementation of PERIPRO® Peristaltic Pumps has proven to be a highly innovative solution. It successfully replaces conventional systems that frequently struggle with suction depth limitations and exorbitant maintenance costs. With exceptional self-priming capabilities and a valve-free design that minimizes clogging, this technology ensures smooth corrosive fluid transfer from deep bunker pits. Furthermore, it delivers long-term operational efficiency by reducing spare parts inventory and eliminating the need for additional components like pulsation dampeners, ultimately enhancing the overall reliability of the waste treatment system.

Operational Challenges of Leachate Transfer in Bunker Pits
Handling leachate in waste disposal facilities or Waste-to-Energy (WtE) units is highly complex due to its corrosive nature and frequent abrasive particle content. A primary challenge in this project was a suction depth requirement exceeding 6 meters at the sump pit area. Most standard industrial pumps struggle to generate sufficient suction lift without experiencing cavitation or mechanical failure under such deep conditions.
Additionally, space constraints in the pit area demanded a compact system design that could accommodate two pumps simultaneously on a single skid. Achieving a stable system without the use of a pulsation dampener was also a technical priority to simplify installation and reduce potential leak points. Leachate, characterized by low viscosity but high destructiveness, requires a solution that is not only chemically corrosion-resistant but also mechanically robust. To address this, NETZSCH Singapore recommended the PERIPRO® Peristaltic Pump, which operates on a hose compression principle. This ensures the fluid only contacts the interior of the pump hose, effectively protecting all other mechanical components from corrosive attack.
The Superiority of PERIPRO® in High Suction Lift Applications

The implemented solution utilizes PERIPRO® units designed to handle a flow rate of 2 m³/h at pressures up to 3 bar. The primary advantage of peristaltic technology over other methods is its powerful self-priming capability, making it the ideal choice for Bunker Pit Pump applications with suction pipe lengths reaching 6.3 meters. In the waste treatment industries of Oceania and Southeast Asia, this suction reliability is crucial for ensuring no liquid accumulates at the bottom of the pit, which could pose environmental risks.
NETZSCH Pumps & Systems engineering teams also optimized the piping system by increasing pipe diameters to minimize pressure losses.
This strategic move allows the system to operate smoothly without a pulsation dampener, which is often difficult to maintain in waste applications. Furthermore, the removal of strainers on the suction side made possible by PERIPRO®’s ability to handle solids further reduces clogging risks and pressure drops, ensuring the system maintains peak performance continuously.
Maintenance Efficiency and Regional Technical Support
From an operational cost management perspective, the use of peristaltic pumps offers significant advantages in terms of Easy Maintenance. The design is remarkably simple as it lacks mechanical seals, check valves, or o-rings components that are often the primary causes of failure in conventional chemical pumps. The only wear component requiring attention is the elastic hose, which can be replaced quickly without disassembling the entire pump unit. This is highly beneficial for government project managers in Singapore and the surrounding region, who demand high levels of unit availability.
This efficient operational approach is supported by:
- Low Spare Parts Inventory: Minimal replacement components are required due to the streamlined design.
- Integrated Skid Systems: Collaboration with local suppliers to create custom skids that house two pumps, optimizing space in the pit area.
- Reputation and Project References: NETZSCH’s local presence and strong track record with government projects provide additional confidence to clients.
Sustainable Solutions for the Energy Sector
The implementation of PERIPRO® technology for corrosive fluid transfer sets a new standard for industrial waste management in the Asia-Pacific region. By prioritizing mechanical toughness and ease of service access, this solution ensures that environmental risks from leaks or pump failures are minimized. For operators in the environmental and energy sectors, transitioning to modern industrial pump technology tailored to specific field requirements is a strategic step toward achieving efficiency and sustainability targets.
