Screw Pump

An Archimedean screw represents a conveyor arrangement consisting of a helix in an inclined pipe and a trough at both ends. A common name for this is a screw pump or screw conveyor.

The origins of this water transport device date back to antiquity and are generally attributed to the Greek engineer Archimedes. Historically, the screw pump was primarily used to raise water to higher levels, particularly for irrigation and drainage purposes. The feeding screw is located inside a closely fitted trough or pipe, usually made of steel or concrete, and it rotates around its central axis. As the feeding screw rotates, chambers are created along its path to carry the water upwards. These chambers are delineated at the top and bottom by each spiral section. The rotation of the feeding screw causes a continuous movement of all chambers towards the end of the screw. At the end of the feeding screw, the water exits the dissolving chamber, and, at the same time, a new room is created at the beginning of the feeding screw, which fills with water from the inlet source.
