Highest precision when pumping silicone components

To produce high-quality silicone, exact dosing of the different components is required. Overall, the higher the demands on the properties and performance density of modern materials such as silicone, the more individual components must be combined and precisely mixed for their production. The correct dosage is essential here. Precision requirements of around one percent are not a rarity. Five components must be combined in the proper mixing ratio in a particular application. These include a medium filled with highly abrasive soot particles. The substances will be taken directly from 200-litre drums and dosed at 25 litres per minute using three existing floor scales.

Challenges in pumping silicone components 

Pumps used to mix the silicone components are expected to do a tremendous job. On the one hand, they must resist chemicals and not suffer any corrosion or damage from the processed substances. In addition, the pumps must handle elevated temperatures without compromising their performance or service life. Moreover, when silicone is manufactured for medical or food processing applications, the pumps must meet the highest hygienic standards. This means they should be easy to clean to avoid contamination or cross-contamination of the silicone products. Another requirement is precise dosing. Any pumps used must be able to provide accurate and repeatable flow rates to ensure product quality. Together with the silicone manufacturer, NETZSCH developed an individual pump solution meeting all requirements.

Pumping bakery products: Easy cleaning & highest hygiene standards

In this case, two of the five ingredients must be fed in larger quantities than the others. Therefore, NETZSCH installed three conventional barrel emptying systems with a NEMO® BH pump and two so-called twin models. These comprise two barrel emptying systems and can therefore be switched over to the second without interruption after emptying one barrel while the first is being replaced. The control of all seven units is bundled and arranged centrally on one interface. For you, this makes handling much more accessible. High-strength steel or robust elastomers have been used for all pumps for the rotor and follow plate, as well as for the stator and the levelling collar. Thus it is guaranteed that even the soot-filled medium can be transported without increased wear on the system components. This ensures uninterrupted production, a long service life, and low maintenance costs.

The functioning of the progressing cavity pump itself also contributes to the long service life of the barrel emptying system. The slim line with fewer individual parts is less susceptible to faults than other conveying technologies. In addition, the material - especially at the seals - is not subjected to as much stress by the uniform rotation as, for example, by alternating stroke-lowering movements with lobe pumps. The external components can also be easily removed for cleaning and maintenance work, which significantly reduces the duration of operational interruptions. With the optional heating or cooling jacket, you can also quickly convey products tending to harden or requiring temperature control.
