Pressure

Pressure describes the physical force exerted on a medium per unit of area. In pump technology, pressure significantly influences the flow rate and system design.

The standard units for indicating pressure are bar (bar) and pascal (Pa), where 1 bar = 100,000 Pa. Important types of pressure in pump technology:

  • Inlet pressure is the pressure at the pump inlet. Depending on the application, it can be affected by gravity, system pre-pressure, or another pump.
  • Differential pressure: The pressure difference between the inlet and outlet sides of a pump, which is generated by the pump output. A higher differential pressure is required to transport media over larger heights or through long pipelines.
  • System pressure is the pressure prevailing in a system, which results from various influencing factors such as frictional losses, fittings, or pipe cross-sections.
  • Maximum operating pressure: The highest pressure for which a pump is designed. This depends on the design, the materials used and the sealing systems.
