Why are gear pumps not suitable for edible fat and oil?

At the mentioned edible oil manufacturer, barrels of 50 to 200 litres, IBC containers (Intermediate Bulk Container) and entire tankers with a volume of almost 30 cubic metres must be filled with different types of edible fat and oil within a maximum of one hour. A stationary conveyor system is not an option because of the different types of transport containers. Until now, a gear pump mounted on a small trolley was used. However, this did not function satisfactorily because the pump gear wheels were too heavily stressed. The high viscosity led to friction and associated heavy wear inside the gear pump. In addition, the grease decomposed due to the high temperatures in the pump, which led to contamination and blockage. The heavy-duty pumping of edible fat and oil caused enormous wear and tear, increasing costs for the edible oil producer.

Requirements for pumping edible fat and oil

High wear, tear and maintenance costs should be avoided because the competitive pressure in the food industry is increasing and increasing. To withstand this in the future, efficient plants are indispensable. The goal is to increase production rates while minimising wear and maintenance costs. Therefore, pumps used to convey edible fat and oil must be corrosion-resistant. To prevent the oil from being broken into droplets, it must also be pumped gently. Vibration and pulsation should be precluded as a matter of urgency. In addition to the requirement to make production more efficient, there are also exceptionally high demands for hygienic processing when pumping edible fat and oil. To avoid contamination, the pump should be easy to clean, which is the only way to ensure hygienic handling. Efficiency and, simultaneously, the highest demands on hygiene - for many, this is precisely where a contradiction arises. However, not for NETZSCH. The global specialist in complex fluid management has the optimal solution in its portfolio, with which you can combine precisely these points.

How to pump edible oils efficiently while complying with all hygiene regulations

For the edible oil manufacturer, the solution to all his problems in pumping edible fat and oil was: The TORNADO® T.Sano®rotary lobe pump with smooth surface from NETZSCH. To reduce the high level of wear and tear and the resulting large amount of maintenance, he converted his system from a gear pump to a mobile rotary lobe pump. The T.Sano® offers a unique advantage thanks to its innovative drive technology. Instead of the standard but very complex and heavy synchronous gear, this model series uses a belt drive. The flexibility required by the oil manufacturer is thus given in every application. In addition, the belt drive simplifies any maintenance measures and does not require lubrication. This considerably reduces your maintenance costs. Thanks to the continuous hard-soft contact between the drive, belt and shafts, smooth running is also achieved, which protects the components.

The high running smoothness offers you yet another advantage. It prevents irregular flow when pumping edible fat and oil, which can lead to pulsations. The innovative design of the rotary lobe pump also contributes to this. Small pockets incorporated into the inner wall ensure the medium can flow smoothly into the pumping chambers. Pulsation is thus extremely low so that you can fill the edible oil without any changes in consistency. Another decisive advantage of the T.Sano® is its CIP (Cleaning-In-Place) capability. This allows you to clean the system in a circular or continuous process without prior dismantling. Thanks to the simplified cleanability of the pump chamber and the optimised outer contours, the rotary lobe pump meets even the highest hygiene standards. By switching to a TORNADO® T.Sano® rotary lobe pump for conveying edible fat and oil, the edible oil manufacturer reduced wear and the associated maintenance costs. What are you waiting for? Let the experts at NETZSCH advise you, and you, too, will find the right solution for making your production more efficient.
