Polymer production: Challenge of pumping mineral oil
Although mineral oil has a comparatively low viscosity, it places high demands on process control. Uniform delivery without pulsations is crucial to avoid fluctuations in the polymer formulation. Even slight deviations can influence the material properties of a hyperelastic polymer. In addition, there are requirements for purity and process reliability. The medium must not be exposed to unnecessary shearing or impaired by leaks or temperature peaks. At the same time, modern production lines require quiet, low-vibration operation that can be seamlessly integrated into continuous operation.
Why the previous solution failed
Hyperelastic polymers are continuously produced at the premium mattress production facility in North America. Mineral oil is dosed continuously and directly affects the quality of the end product. Conventional pump technologies often reach their limits here, for example, due to pulsating flow rates, increased wear or rising maintenance costs. These factors lead to unstable processes, unplanned downtime, and an increased risk of quality fluctuations, especially as production capacity utilisation rises and market demand grows.
Mineral oil pumping for stable polymer processes
The company turned to NETZSCH for a solution. Since 2021, NOTOS® 2NS two screw pumps have reliably conveyed the mineral oil. The underlying technology is designed for applications needing a uniform, pulsation-free flow. This maintains stable mineral oil dosing and ensures reproducible polymer formulations. Pulsation-free delivery maintains a steady flow and prevents process fluctuations. This guarantees consistent quality in hyperelastic polymers. The pump also operates at very low shear, preserving the flow and quality of the mineral oil.
